Upstone Materials Inc. – Plattsburgh, NY

On Wednesday, July 22nd, Upstone Materials hosted their annual Open House at the company’s Plattsburgh location.

The highlight of the day was tours given to families, neighbors, and local legislators by Tori Bruce (transportation coordinator), Jon Maginn (sales), Angus Lamora (sales), and Greg Poupore (safety specialist). The tour first stopped at the concrete plant, then moved around piles of #1 Stone, #3 Stone, Friction Stone, Item 4, and RAP on their way to the quarry viewing area. After seeing the quarry, they moved on to the asphalt plants and crushing operation.

Guests also had the opportunity to learn about aggregate, concrete, and asphalt operations through our information tents and concrete demonstrations. Ron Boyd (RM driver) and Chris Parent (RM Super) showed pouring techniques using two concrete block forms, which visitors could then write in. Kaley Basile (lab super) preformed a concrete test, explaining the importance of “Air” and “Slump” tests. These evaluations measure the amount of air voids and assess the workability and consistency in a concrete mix. Through the day, she also demonstrated how we use sieves to test aggregate sizing and showed different product samples.

Other activities included rides in the manlift with Mark Tousignant (mechanic), observing drone flight with Cash Feeley (staff accountant), lunch from a local food truck, playing in the sand pile and bouncy house, and painting concrete souvenirs.

This year, we hosted over 100 visitors and are already looking forward to our 2027 Open House!
